Islamabad, August 2 — The Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-i-Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP), a coalition of six opposition parties, on Friday called for a comprehensive national dialogue among all political parties and the formulation of a new Charter of Democracy to restore constitutional order and democratic governance in Pakistan.
The call came during the second day of TTAP’s multi-party conference, which was originally scheduled to take place at the Tulip Banquet Hall in Islamabad. According to alliance leaders, authorities blocked access to the venue, compelling the conference to relocate to a private farmhouse.
Addressing a press conference, TTAP leader Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar unveiled a joint resolution endorsed by the participating parties, stressing the urgency of consensus among political forces.
“There is an urgent need for a new democratic charter among all political parties and political forces,” the resolution stated. “As a result of ongoing attacks from the hybrid system, Pakistan’s Constitution, particularly the fundamental rights enshrined in Articles 8 to 11, and the parliamentary democratic framework have been rendered ineffective. The social contract between the people and the state stands broken.”
The resolution underscored the importance of initiating a national dialogue aimed at achieving broad political consensus on several key issues, including:
-
Supremacy of the Constitution and Parliament
-
Rule of law and independence of the judiciary
-
Appointment of an impartial Election Commission and ensuring free and fair elections
-
Addressing the crises in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the former tribal areas
-
Formation of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission
-
Improvement of inter-provincial relations and equitable water distribution
-
Rebuilding trust and cooperation among political parties
-
Investigation of unlawful administrative actions
-
Protection of media freedoms
-
Safeguarding the rights of women and minorities
-
Defining Pakistan’s position in international relations
TTAP has declared full support for all anti-government protests and aims to be a unifying platform for democratic forces. Last month, the alliance formalized its organizational structure, marking a new phase in its political mobilization.
Khokhar emphasized that without a renewed commitment to democratic norms and a clear roadmap, Pakistan’s democratic fabric would continue to erode. He urged all stakeholders to set aside differences and come together to restore constitutional supremacy and democratic accountability.
